Whose Voice Is That? Learning to Discern Your Higher Self from Ego, Attachment & Entities
One of the most profound — and often most disorienting — parts of the spiritual path is learning to tell the difference between the voices within you. Not all thoughts are created equal, and not all of them are yours.
If you've ever caught yourself spiraling in self-doubt, obsessing over a fear, or feeling pulled toward something that doesn't align with your values — and wondered where did that even come from? — you're not alone. This is one of the most common struggles among those awakening to their spiritual nature, and it deserves a real, grounded conversation.
The Four Voices You May Be Hearing
1. The Higher Self
Your Higher Self is the eternal, soul-level version of you — the part that exists beyond fear, beyond ego, beyond the noise of the physical world. Thoughts from your Higher Self tend to feel:
Calm and clear — not urgent or panicked
Expansive — they open doors rather than close them
Loving — even when delivering hard truths, there is no cruelty in them
Consistent — they don't contradict themselves or shift based on your mood
Quietly persistent — they return gently, again and again, without force
Your Higher Self speaks in alignment. It doesn't beg, manipulate, or shame. It simply knows — and it waits for you to listen.
2. The Ego
The ego is not your enemy — it is a protective mechanism that developed to help you survive. But it operates from fear, scarcity, and the need for control. Ego-driven thoughts often feel:
Urgent and pressured — you have to decide right now
Comparative — measuring your worth against others
Defensive or reactive — quick to feel attacked or dismissed
Rooted in lack — not enough time, not enough love, not enough success
Loud and repetitive — cycling the same worry or narrative on loop
The ego wants to keep you small and safe. It mistakes comfort for truth. When you notice a thought that contracts you, that makes you feel less-than or desperate — that's the ego speaking.
3. Thoughts from Attachment
Attachment-based thoughts are subtler and often the hardest to identify because they feel deeply personal. These are thoughts born from unhealed wounds, unmet needs, and emotional cords — to people, outcomes, identities, or past experiences. They often sound like:
"If I don't have this, I won't be okay."
"I need them to understand me or I can't move forward."
"I can't let go of this — it's part of who I am."
Attachment thoughts are driven by emotional hunger. They feel sticky, heavy, and often come with a sense of desperation or grief. They are not bad — they are signals pointing to where healing is needed. But they are not truth, and they are not guidance.
4. Thoughts from Entities & Energies Not of the Highest Light
This is the part of the conversation that many people shy away from — but it is real, and it matters.
We are energetic beings moving through an energetic world. Not all energies we encounter are aligned with our highest good. Thought-forms, attachments, and entities that are not of the highest light can and do influence our mental and emotional landscape — particularly when our energetic boundaries are weak, when we are in states of fear, grief, or addiction, or when we have not been intentional about our spiritual protection.
Thoughts that may originate from these sources often feel:
Intrusive and foreign — like they came from nowhere and don't feel like "you"
Dark, hopeless, or nihilistic — encouraging disconnection, self-destruction, or isolation
Seductive but misaligned — they may feel exciting or powerful but lead you away from your values
Amplified versions of your fears — taking your existing wounds and turning up the volume
Resistant to prayer, light, or spiritual practice — they intensify when you try to clear them
This is not meant to create fear — awareness is protection. When you know what you're dealing with, you can address it with intention and power.
How to Begin Discerning the Difference
Pause before you react. Most ego and attachment-based thoughts demand immediate action. Your Higher Self is patient. Give yourself space before acting on any strong internal impulse.
Ask: does this thought expand or contract me? Higher Self guidance opens you. Fear, ego, and lower energies close you down.
Check the emotional signature. Love, peace, and clarity are hallmarks of higher guidance. Shame, panic, obsession, and despair are not.
Ground and protect your energy daily. A consistent practice of grounding, shielding, and calling in your guides and highest light creates a cleaner internal environment — one where lower-frequency thoughts have less room to take root.
Work with your crystals intentionally. Stones like black tourmaline, labradorite, obsidian, and amethyst are powerful allies for psychic protection and clarity. Keep them close during meditation and inner work.
Seek support when needed. If you feel persistently influenced by energies that don't feel like your own, a spiritual house clearing or personal energy clearing session can be profoundly helpful in restoring your energetic sovereignty.
You Are the Gatekeeper
The most important thing to remember is this: you have authority over your own energetic space. You are not at the mercy of every thought that passes through your mind. With practice, intention, and the right tools, you can learn to hear your Higher Self clearly — and lovingly release what is not yours to carry.
This is sacred work. And you are more than capable of it.
